Abstract
Proteins have a hydration shell and exist in a bulk solvent. We propose distinct roles for the hydration water and the bulk solvent: 1) internal protein fluctuations are slaved to fluctuations of the hydration water; 2) large scale protein fluctuations are slaved to fluctuations of the bulk solvent. Experimental results for hydration effects on myoglobin from a broad range of tools – broadband dielectric relaxation spectroscopy, Mossbauer effect, incoherent neutron scattering, ligand binding, and transient optical spectroscopy – are given a unified explanation by our model. We extend the applications to incoherent neutron scattering data for the mean-square displacement of other hydrated protein powder samples including maltose binding protein. We have also extended the model to include effects of bulk solvent on large-scale protein fluctuations: for example, to the fluctuations of the functional cleft in dehydrated lysozyme in glycerol probed by dielectric spectroscopy, NMR, and incoherent neutron scattering. The results reinforce the concept that fluctuations of the bulk solvent drive large scale protein fluctuations. (07-13-2009. Revised 11-3-2009)

[Source: UA College of Agriculture and Life Sciences] - The starchy endosperm in cereal grains supplies more than 50 percent of the calories in the human diet worldwide and serves as raw material for many industrial products. Yet not much is known about the earliest stages of the endosperm's development, when critical genetic processes can influence a grain crop's yield, nutritional content, milling properties and other traits that affect its biological and economic value.
Using maize as a model, scientists and students at the University of Arizona, the University of Utah, Central Michigan University and New College of Florida will identify the gene networks that control endosperm development and function during the first eight to 10 days after pollination.
The National Science Foundation has granted $4.93 million for the five-year project, with the University of Arizona as the lead institution.

[Source: State Press] - ASU students seeking research opportunities can now use uResearch, a new Web site designed to connect them with research positions for academic purposes, which officially launched this week.
The site, created by the Office of the Vice President for Research and Economic Affairs, allows students to search for research opportunities on ASU’s four campuses.
A collaboration between the Office for Research and Economic Affairs and the Office of the Provost, the site has been undergoing testing for the last two weeks.

PHOENIX -- The VA Veterans Day Parade, held annually on Veterans Day, began in 1997 with 50 entries and approximately 10,000 people on the streets. Now, there are around 100 entries and more than 200,000 spectators that line the streets to watch the parade.
